Care For The Emotional Wounds
Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, a psychiatrist who has been studying trauma for almost 50 years, found out that mainstream methods for treating trauma, like Prozac or Zoloft, didn't work very well. He wanted to find alternative ways to help people live in bodies that feel safe.
He realized that we must understand and caring for our emotional wounds that trauma and stress leave behind, instead of just medicate to numb the pain.
Dr. Bessel and his team also turned to yoga for trauma recovery.
Yoga, he found, was a way to form a deep relationship with one's internal sensory system, helping people understand and connect with their bodies.
In my own studies, I paired yoga with meditation in order to shift my brain from thinking to sensing - where I could then practice the emotions of compassion and gratitude.
As a matter of fact, yoga turned out to be more effective in treating PTSD than any drug they had studied.
Dr. Bessel also mentioned neurofeedback, where electrodes are placed on your skull to help you produce brainwaves that keep you calm and focused. This method was promising in helping reshape the brain to be open to new experiences.
Lastly, he discussed the use of psychedelics like MDMA for trauma treatment. Despite the risks, MDMA was shown to have profound effects in treating trauma, allowing people to explore traumatic experiences safely and see themselves with compassion.

Dr. Bessel emphasizes that healing from trauma is an experiment, as what works for one person might not work for another. The important thing is to keep an open mind and remember that there's always more than one way to heal.
