What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

A Layman's View of Understanding Traumatic Stress and Building Belief in Recovery

To my understanding; stress, chronic stress, traumatic stress and PTSD are different degrees of the same genetically coded, automatic response from the brain and body – to cope with danger and difficulty; real or remembered.

Stress can be measured (image by author)

Each of the states of stress can be measured by the affected person's subjective reporting, but in my view, it may be more important to consider how new technology is enabling various methods of electronic and magnetic resonance brain scans to provide an objective measure of stress.

Measuring Stress Recovery With Brain Scans

Brain scans permit a measurable comparative basis for quantifying changes in the individual brain states over time and may also provide a comparative framework to others.

Brain scans show that stress is the activation of the fight/flight or freeze response. It is characterized by a “High-Beta-Brainwave” state of heightened attention state, along with a release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol and natural endorphins which provide the body with rapid energy combined with pain reducing chemicals.

Traumatic Stress also includes deeply upsetting emotional components that involve all the stages of grief, including denial, anger, anxiety & depression and… somewhere along the line… acceptance.

Everyone who has lost a loved one knows all too well the pain and slow road to happiness and joyful living.

When We Get Into Disorder

The 'Disorder' magnitude of Traumatic Stress is a result of remaining in the early stages of grief for such a long time as to teach the brain and body to build the habit of producing the stress chemicals.

Looping Into Deeper Disorder

A person with Traumatic Stress moves into ‘disorder’, or PTSD, when they continue to ruminate about the stress incident.

A looping pattern of denial, blaming and anger can persist for weeks, months or even years and decades.

Without intentional treatment with yoga, meditation and counseling , PTSD will not, and cannot be changed, but rather it can manifest as Narcissistic Personality and lead to many unhealthy relationships, health issues and additional traumatic life events.
